Bow Wow Woods Project Update

Sheffield Land Trust, Egremont Land Trust, and Greenagers have almost met our goal to purchase, protect, and maintain a new community trail and woodland education area called Bow Wow Woods.

This project, part of the Sheffield-Egremont Corridor Project, is a 54-acre wooded parcel along Route 41 and Bow Wow Road, where Egremont borders Sheffield. Of the project’s total cost ($1 million), we secured about $900,000 through foundation grants, a generous gift from a long-time Sheffield Land Trust member, and membership support.

Greenagers now owns the land and will act as its day-to-day steward. Sheffield Land Trust and Egremont Land Trust hold a conservation restriction on the property and share the monitoring of the land.

We now need to raise the remaining $100,000 for ongoing maintenance. If you can help, please click on the To Join, Renew, or Donate Online or by Mail button on this site, and either enter your information online or send a check. Be sure to mention Bow Wow Woods in the comments (online) or in the check memo. Thank you!!

They will bring with them 2 falcons, 1 red-tailed hawk, and 3 owls. Everyone is welcome to this educational event.

A Tribute to Wendy Linscott, 1947 – 2022

The members of the board of Egremont Land Trust join our local community in mourning the death of Wendy Linscott, on April 19, 2022. Back in the mid 1980s, she played an instrumental role in helping to preserve Jug End Reservation in Egremont from developers, which led to the formation of the Egremont Land Trust, and she joined the ELT board in 2005. Wendy served on the Egremont Planning Board from 1988 to 1994. Her Berkshire County advocacy also included serving on the boards of Berkshire Natural Resources Council, Berkshire Botanical Garden, Community Health Program, Edith Wharton Restoration, Southern Berkshire Visiting Nurse Association, and Berkshire Choral Institute.

Generous with her time and legal expertise, Wendy was a strong and valuable presence on our board. As Peg Muskrat, our board president, said, “I always knew I could go to her for advice and knew I would get a straight answer.”

We will always be grateful for Wendy’s commitment and wisdom. We feel her loss deeply.

Karner Brook Walk Update April 2021

In honor of Arbor Day, April 30, 2021, ELT will donate a tree to the future Karner Brook Walk in South Egremont. This future path will connect the Old Mill Restaurant to Mom’s Restaurant. Terry Moore, owner of the Old Mill, is spearheading this wonderful project.

Here is Terry Moore’s article from our 2021 Newsletter for the background on this topic:

I’m happy to report that the Karner Brook Walk (KBW) is moving along, albeit at a snail’s pace. The transfer of the donated land to the ELT from our wonderful neighbors was a monumental task. e survey and title search took months but is now accomplished!

It has been a great privilege working with Egremont residents Alexis Wreden and Robert Fakelmann, the principals of Working Design—Landscape + Architecture. Together we have been gathering ideas and concepts, with visits to Parsons Marsh in Lenox, Berkshire Botanical Garden in Stockbridge, and Innisfree Gardens in Millbrook, NY. All of these unique places have inspired us to create what we hope will be a model project for our village for many years to come.

The concept behind the KBW is the creation of a contemplative path to view the brook and enjoy the wildlife in our area. e proposal Alexis and Robert have submitted calls for removal of non-native and invasive species, while encouraging the growth of the existing mature trees. e pathway between Mom’s Restaurant and the Old Mill will vary from gravel path to raised black-locust decking, including an elevated observation platform from which the brook’s bending course can be observed at full advantage.

I have a detailed map of the entire project with all of the supporting information and would be happy to share it with any interested party. I will be reaching out to all of you, and others, in hopes that your generous donations will bring the project to fruition.

Wildflower Walk Postponed

ELT has decided to take another year off from hosting our Spring, in-person Wildflower Walk.

We highly recommend that you take a look at Stephanie’s video from April last year to enjoy seeing what’s growing and blooming this time of year.

Above is the YouTube video of Stephanie Bergman’s wildflower walk she recorded at the end of April 2020.

She walked with her 2 daughters and cameraman on ELT’s property on Route 71 in North Egremont.

Stephanie holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Education and a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. She and her family live in South Egremont.
